A huge crowd that turned out to attend a political rally during the last general elections.
The role of men and boys in fostering gender equity and the elimination of gender
based violence remains largely unrecognized.
This submission is an integrated undertaking benchmarked on the identified need to
address the intersection between gender based violence, HIV prevention, AIDS
management and the inclusion of the same in national responses, programming and policies. The Its time Campaign, which is an initiative of men and boys under the
umbrella of the Coexist Initiative is aimed at engaging men and boys in Kenya in holistically addressing the above intersections.
The campaign is about addressing how
gender identities and particular constructions of masculinity compound and contribute
to the skyrocketing HIV infection rates, dismissal AIDS management services, the
unfair and debilitating burden of home based care principally provided by women, and
the current upsurge of gender based violence in the country.
This project is premised on working with men and boys to change their attitudes and
practices related to their role in the above identified areas. The Its time Campaign is
aimed at stirring up a dramatic paradigm shift by which men and boys will break from
“tradition” to become acclaimed partners in the fight against archaic traditions and
practices, HIV infection, AIDS management, eradication of all forms of gender based
violence and the general empowerment of women and girls.
